Kestrel Haven Avian Migration Observatory is the NOAA Cooperative Weather Station for Schuyler County. We provide biological and climatological data for the County. View the NOAA interactive map showing temps and precip for the last 24 hours in our region.

We are a privately owned perpetual wildlife sanctuary and the only full-time, non-profit avian research (banding) station in New York State. Bird banding is under the aegis of the U.S. Department of the Interior and data are published in scientific journals as well as being publicly available through the Department. As of january 2010, over 80,000 birds of 145 forms have been banded here. A total of 220 avian species have been reported as a part of daily point counts. The overall data is invaluable in assessing the biologic health of the county. The property is protected through a perpetual conservation easement with the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.

Daily weather data is transmitted to the National Weather Service and then made available worldwide. These data form the "official" weather database for Schuyler County. Temp/precip for the region, local snowfall for the region, temp and rainfall reports (we are known as Mecklenburg or MECN6.)

KHMO has written articles for the Catharine Valley Trail newsletter. Also, several articles were done in the Watkins Glen Review & Express newspaper, and we also report to the Chemung Valley Audubon Society CVBIRDS-Listserve. CVBIRDS is a listserve for nature lovers in the Chemung Valley area of NY State. Of course, our primary focus is on our KHAMOlistserv Yahoogroups site that is a natural history forum for the area and nation. The primary focus of the list is wild birds, their behavior, actions, deformities, sightings, and environment. Other nature topics can be discussed as well. We primarily publish in North American Bird Bander, The Kingbird, Argia and other avian and odonate journals, as well as, in mass media nature and bird publications. We have been recognized by the American Bird Conservancy as an important bird research area and appear on the map they commissioned from National Geographic. We are also in several other internet lists/publications and the like.
